Bubbio (from the Latin bivium, because it was located on the crossroads of Roman roads between the Bormida Valley and the Astigiano area), is a village in the Langhe Astigiane that has kept intact some important urban features.
The old houses arranged on either side of the 14th-century Via Maestra, delimited respectively by the castle and the parish church, a series of contrade, alleys and stairways that create evocative views and stone corners forgotten by time.

The castle of yesterday
Of the ancient thirteenth-century manor house – which followed the same passages of ownership as the fief – practically nothing remains today. With the Spanish takeover in 1639, it suffered serious and irreparable damage. Only the ancient tower, which from the western side defended the town as an advanced sentinel, was saved from destruction.
The ruins then passed into the ownership of the marquise Maria Eleonora Cacherano Crivelli Scarampi Provano, who alienated it, between 1783 and 1787, to the lord of Bubbio Annibale Galvagno, a member of the illustrious family that since 1766 had acquired, by royal patent of enfeoffment, the fourth part of the fief for the sum of 6200 lire.
The residential part was rebuilt in neo-medieval style in the 19th century and is now an elegant, stately home, with large frescoed rooms, reception rooms and a beautiful park set on a rocky spur overlooking the river. Privately owned, the castle is opened each year on the occasion of the Polentone festival, the first Sunday after Easter, for the start of the historical parade.
